2Oth October 2007

A very belated announcement, but.... Louis Philippe released two albums earlier this year.

An Unkown Spring is Louis's twelfth solo outing, and definitely the high point of his recording career so far. There's a possibility of performing a specially arranged version in New York with avant-chamber ensemble The Four Bags.

Louis Philippe Live is a double CD, the first of a duo performance we gave in Bremen, Germany, the second of a trio concert (with the addition of David Longdon) in Bush Hall, London.

Bukky Leo's Sunday night jam session in Battersea ended its run after several enjoyable years.

21st October 2006

Cathal Coughlan's latest album Foburg, a version of the Flannery's Mounted Head audio-visual work, has been released and is available here. Cathal and the Grand Necropolitan Sextet, in which I play bass, will be performing on 7th November at Bush Hall, London, and on 26th November at Vicar St, Dublin, the latter being the second live performance of Flannery. You can find gig details for both of those here.

The day before, 25th November, I'll be performing at the Porgy and Bess Club, Vienna, with Louis Philippe and (ex-Young Marble Giant) Stuart Moxham.

On 1st November I'll be playing at the Bull's Head, Barnes, London, as part of Paul Weinreb's jazz quintet, also featuring Dave Bitelli on tenor sax and Saleem Raman on drums. You can catch me playing jazz every week, along with Paul, in the house band for tenor saxophonist Bukky Leo's Sunday night jam session, 9.00pm at the Beaufoy Bar (Lavender Hill, London SW11).

23rd December 2005

You can now order The Happy End's final CD, Turn Things Upside Down, by credit card.

Cathal Coughlan's new audio-visual work Flannery's Mounted Head was premiered on 16th September as part of the Cork 2005 festival and received a fantastic reception. Cathal and the Grand Necroplitan Sextet have just been in Lvingston Studios, north London, recording the instrumental tracks, and a CD of the piece should be available sometime mid-2006.

There's a possibility of a live performance of Louis Philippe's Azure album, complete with full orchestra, in Bremen, Germany. I'll keep you posted...

1st December 2004

Louis Philippe's latest album, The Wonder Of It All, is finished, and we're really very happy with it. You can pre-order a copy and get a bonus CD of unreleased material.

You can catch me playing jazz weekly in the house band for tenor saxophonist Bukky Leo's Sunday night jam session at the Beaufoy Bar (Lavender Hill, London SW11).

... apart from Sunday 19th December, when singer Sarah Jane Morris will be celebrating 25 years in the music business with a one-off gig at Ronnie Scott's. I'll be playing on Coal Not Dole, an old Happy End number, along witha few other ex-Enders.

Talking of ex-Enders, check out Bernadette Keefe and Glen Gordon's ...and Don't Tell Your Mama, a great collection of kid's music with grown-up arrangements.

22nd April 2004

Oh dear, oh dear... it's been eighteen months since I last updated this site.

The latter half of 2002 saw me out of action thanks to a slipped disc, and what with the build up to and arrival of a baby boy (Jake) last October, I was hardly musically active in 2003 either.

However, 2004 sees me flexing my jazz chops again. I'm playing in the house band for tenor saxophonist Bukky Leo's Sunday night jam session at the Beaufoy (Lavender Hill, London SW11) and have played a few gigs with pianist Paul Weinreb, who's hoping to get his quintet (with Claude Deppa, trumpet, Tony Kofi, sax, and Brian Abrahams, drums) going. I've also been rehearsing a new band with trumpeter Ted Emmet and drummer Andrea Trillo.

With a bit of luck, and a fair financial wind, there might also be new projects from Louis Philippe and Cathal Coughlan in the not too distant future.

Thanks for popping by.

29th November 2002

I've only just started playing music again after a four-month hiatus caused by a slipped disc...

Cathal Coughlan's new album The Sky's Awful Blue (with myself on double bass) has been released on the Beneath label. The band played a handful of gigs in Ireland and London in May; unfortunately I had to miss the gig at the Borderline, London in September due to my back problem.

• Louis's new album My Favourite Part Of You (on which I play piano) will be released in France early in 2003 by XIII Bis records. Check Louis's Sunshine site for further news.

• Since my last (disgracefully distant) update of this site, 9th & 13th, the words-and-music collaboration between Louis, myself and novelist Jonathan Coe, has been released in Europe and Japan on the Tricatel label.

28th April 2002

Cathal Coughlan's new album The Sky's Awful Blue (with myself on double bass) has been completed, and gigs are planned for the Half Moon, Cork (May 25th), The Shelter, Dublin (26th), and The Spitz, London (27th).

• Users of the Sibelius music notation package: I've corrected a couple of bugs in my Delete Chord Notes plug-in.

9th & 13th, the words-and-music collaboration between Louis, myself and novelist Jonathan Coe, has been released in France on the Tricatel label, and we've played a couple of gigs as a "trio". More are possible later in the year.
